Start of operations in the Colmeal common land
Antarr began in January the intervention project in the exploration concession area with the Local Community of Baldios do Colmeal, in the municipality of Góis.
This is an area of more than 1,000 hectares, all of which was destroyed by fires in 2017 and is therefore practically deforested, except for some areas recently afforested by the Comunidade Local do Baldio.
The intervention, in agreement with the Local Community, aims to recover the productive potential of the area, while at the same time creating conditions for the recovery of the most sensitive areas – for example, the water lines – and also to reduce the risk of fire, creating greater safety for the surrounding villages and Vale da Ribeira do Carvalhal do Sapo, an area of high scenic and natural value that is sought after by nature lovers.
In pursuit of the goal of developing a multifunctional landscape, agroforestry areas will be created for the production of cork and fruit, such as chestnuts and arbutus, and native hardwood stands will be restored and expanded.
As can be seen from the name Colmeal, honey is an important product, as evidenced by the existence of more than 400 hives in the project area. Antarr is working with the local community not only to ensure that the interventions don’t affect honey production but also to adopt measures to encourage an increase in honey production, with the consequent economic and environmental impact, given the importance of bees for pollination.
Antarr’s intervention project in the Colmeal common land aims to restore and enhance the region’s natural capital. The planned reordering of the landscape aims to break the historical recurrence of forest fires and promote a diverse and multifunctional landscape.
